미국의 심장부이며 수려한 자연 경관을 뒤로 하고있는 워싱턴 지역에 위치한 본교는 1970년 6월 20일 고 김호길박사와 뜻을 함께한 유지들과 그 당시 주미대사관에 워싱턴에 파견된 강성익 교육관님이 뜻을 모아, 한국 정부의 지원금을 받아 미국의 수도 근교에 최초로 건립된 한국학교입니다.
한국인 후세들에게 한국의 언어, 문화교육을 통하여 자긍심과 올바른 정체성을 갖게 함으로써, 미국 및 인류사회에 이바지 할 수 있는 사람이 될 수 있도록 교육한다는 목표 아래 교육에 임하고 있습니다.
미래의 주역이 될 우리의 자녀들을 양육하는데 있어 근본이 되는, 긍정적이며 건강한 정체성 확립의 필요성은 아무리 강조해도 지나치다 할 수 없겠습니다. 조상의 언어를 배우고 그 언어를 통한 조상의 얼과 문화를 배움으로써 우리의 자녀들은 올바른 꿈을 품게 될 것이고, 이 지역사회는 물론 미국의 주류 및 더 나아가 21세기를 책임 질 든든한 일꾼으로 성장해 갈 것입니다.
그 꿈의 실현을 돕기 위해 우리 모두의 교사진들은 최선을 다 할 것임을 약속하는 바이며, 오늘도 정해진 목표를 향해 힘차게 한 걸음 한 걸음 옮기시는 학부모님들과 모든 학생들의 발걸음과 보조를 같이 하고자 합니다.

The United Korean School of Washington (UKS), Maryland Campus, is located in the heart of the capital city of our nation. The Washington Korean School was established collaboratively by several Korean community leaders including the late Professor/Dr. Ho Gil Kim, and Sung Ik Kang, Educational counselor of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, on June 20, 1970. Limited financial aid and support were provided by the Republic of Korea at the time.
The goal of the school is to provide a strong educational foundation of the Korean language and culture in order to help our future-generations establish a strong identity and self-esteem as Korean-American.
To successfully raise future Korean American leaders in our society, the necessity of cultivating a strong identity must be addressed firmly. By learning the Korean language, students will acquire knowledge and the better understanding of their ancestors’ country and culture. It is our hope that the UKS students are well prepared and inspired to become future leaders of this nation and, furthermore, of the world.
My staff and I pledge to put our utmost effort into providing meaningful and productive instructional programs for our students. All of our stakeholders, students, teachers, and parents will climb up each step of the way to reach the goals that are set for us together and collaboratively.
